Full event details

Introduction
Engineering Systemisers is a UCL-led initiative designed to equip students (ages 11-18) with the mindset and skills to understand and tackle complex real-world challenges through gamification, systems thinking, and systems engineering. Delivered by Systems Frontier Lab, the programme introduces students to how engineers think, design, and make decisions in complex systems.

What Students Experience

Our interactive workshops provide a hands-on, simulation-based learning experience, where students work in teams to explore real-world challenges across domains such as: Health, Transport, Energy, and Space systems.

Through structured, game-based simulations and collaborative design exercises, students learn to think and act like systems engineers. Gamification workshops are co-developed and delivered by the UCL Engineering Systemisers community, including academics, university students, and industry practitioners.

Skills Developed

Students develop key capabilities including:

  • Systems thinking and “big picture” reasoning
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving
  • Understanding stakeholders and complex challenges
  • Creative design and decision-making
  • Teamwork and communication

Beyond the Workshop

Students also have opportunities to:

  • Receive a recognised JSTP / JSEP Certificate (endorsed by UCL and the Institute for Systems Engineering)
  • Engage with a growing community of students, researchers, and engineers
  • Develop early insight into STEM pathways and careers
  • Take on roles such as School Systems Ambassador

Programme Levels

Structured progression pathway:

  • Level 1: Junior Systems Thinking Practitioner (JSTP) -> flagship 1-day workshop
  • Level 2: Junior Systems Engineering Practitioner (JSEP) -> 2-day extended workshop
  • Level 3: Emerging Systems Leaders (ESL) --> Advanced bespoke programme

Key Details

Workshops combine:

  • Interactive Systemisers simulations
  • Engineering challenges and case studies
  • Short guided inputs (mini-lectures)
  • Group discussions and reflection

Sessions are designed for groups of up to 20 students, for best outcome, with flexible delivery options. Costs vary depending on format, with bursaries available.

Impact & Outcomes

  • Increased engagement and interest in STEM
  • Development of engineering and employability skills
  • Greater awareness of STEM pathways and careers
  • Improved confidence in tackling complex problems
  • Exposure to diverse engineering roles and perspectives

Gatsby benchmarks

  • Learning from career and labour market information
  • Addressing the needs of each pupil
  • Encounters with further and higher education
