St Mary’s is delighted to invite students in their first year of sixth form or college to our "Get Ahead!" masterclass day. This event is designed to prepare students for the UCAS application process and equip them with the skills needed for university level study. Our Student Ambassadors will also be sharing their journey into higher education and experience of student life. Finally, students will hear about the support available at university from our different departments.

10am: Welcome and introduction
10.15am: Academic research and writing
The ability to find, examine, and analyse academic research and write in an academic style, is vital for university. This is why we’re running a session designed to help you find scholarly sources and develop your academic writing style. Not only will this prepare you for university level study, it will help you find some good evidence to include in your personal statement. Admissions Tutors want to see that you’ve done some wider reading around your chosen subject area!
11am: Break
11.15am: Personal statement writing
This workshop outlines the UCAS application process, including some key dos and don’ts when it comes to writing a personal statement. We’ll give you a suggested structure designed to get you thinking about what experiences and achievements you may want to include, helping you make the best possible start to your personal statement.
12pm: Lunch
12.45pm: Campus tour
Tour our Strawberry Hill Campus with our Student Ambassadors to find out more about our facilities and services. This is a fantastic opportunity to ask questions and find out what it’s like to be a St Mary’s student!
1.45pm: Student life session/Q&A
Our Student Ambassadors will be facilitating a Q&A on student life. You’ll hear about their journey into higher education, transition from sixth form or college, and their experience of student life.
