Is God Necessary?

The French thinker Laplace (1749 – 1827) once said of God ‘I have no need of that hypothesis’. He argued that science could explain all events in the world without appealing to God. On the other hand, thinkers such as Aquinas (1225 – 1274) argued that belief in God was necessary to explain the world – necessary for the world to exist in the first place. This session will explore this disagreement and challenge us to be clearer about the nature of faith, reason, explanation and necessity.
