Public Services – Kendal Flooding HYDRA
Can you manage a major emergency when a community is under threat?
Step into the role of frontline emergency responders in this immersive, team-based HYDRA simulation. Inspired by the severe flooding experienced in Kendal during Storm Desmond, students are placed at the heart of a rapidly developing major incident where they must work together, assess changing risks and make critical decisions to protect the public.
As the emergency unfolds, students will prepare and deliver public safety messages, coordinate emergency support for affected residents, respond to people stranded by rising floodwater, manage resources and work with partner agencies. They will also use drone footage to assess the scale of the damage and consider their responsibilities under the Civil Contingencies Act. Just when the situation appears to be coming under control, a chemical spill creates a new and potentially serious threat, requiring teams to reassess their priorities and response.
This realistic and fast-moving experience develops teamwork, leadership, communication, problem-solving and decision-making under pressure, while giving students a unique insight into how public services work together to protect communities during a major emergency. Approximately 4 hours.
