University event offered by University of Essex
Short Session Delivered online
Date:21 January 2027
Time:5pm – 5.50pm
What's it about?:
When a disaster leads to loss of life, who should be held responsible? Is it enough to punish individual employees, or should entire organisations be accountable for the consequences of their decisions? This interactive session explores the law of corporate manslaughter through some of the most challenging questions facing modern society. Using real-world examples, including the Grenfell Tower tragedy, we will examine how the law responds when failures in management, safety and decision-making contribute to deaths. We'll consider why it can be difficult to hold large organisations accountable, how the law has evolved to address these problems, and why current rules do not go far enough.
