Join us for a friendly online taster lecture to support your current studies and find out what it might be like to study art history at university.
Session time: Thursday 26 November, 2.15-3.00pm
In this live interactive History of Art session, we will be joined by Dr Sarah Wade, Associate Professor in Museum Studies in the School of History and Art History at University of East Anglia to explore the sublime in relation to representations of the sea in art history and contemporary art.
We discuss the ways that the sublime has been understood and portrayed in seascapes by artists at different points in history from Romantic paintings to present day multimedia installations. We also consider if the sublime has any currency in today’s ecologically troubled times.
At the end of the session, you’ll be aware of the ways that the sublime has been expressed and challenged in artworks about the sea and feel prepared to express your thoughts about this work.
Suitable for: Aged 16+ pre-university students studying, or with a possible interest in studying, History of Art and related disciplines. Student groups, and individual students and teachers are very welcome to join us.
