Discover how clean energy can power the technologies of the future in this practical, hands-on engineering workshop!
Students will explore the principles of renewable energy, energy conversion and electrical power by building and testing a small-scale clean-energy system.
Would you like to bring your students to an MDX Renewable Energy Engineering taster day to supporting their learning and aspire their future career?
Working in pairs or small teams, they will investigate how renewable energy can be generated, converted and used to power an electrical load.
Through guided challenges, students will experiment with technologies such as solar, wind or hydrogen energy systems, small electric motors/generators, electrical circuits and energy-storage components. They will measure voltage, current and power, investigate how different design choices affect performance, and use their results to improve their system.
To keep the session accessible for all learners, the workshop begins with the basic principles of energy generation and conversion before progressing to practical testing and optimisation. More confident groups can explore optional challenges such as improving energy efficiency, modifying their design, managing energy storage or investigating how changing operating conditions affects the electrical power produced.
By the end of the workshop, students will have:
✓ Gained hands-on experience with renewable and clean-energy technologies
✓ Explored how energy is converted into useful electrical power
✓ Used practical measurements to test and optimise an engineering system
✓ Strengthened problem-solving, teamwork and critical-thinking skills
✓ Connected science and engineering concepts to real-world sustainability challenges
✓ Built confidence in renewable energy, electronics and engineering design
This session provides an exciting introduction to renewable energy engineering and sustainable technology, showing how electronics, electrical engineering and design can contribute to cleaner energy solutions. It can inspire future pathways in electronic engineering, electrical engineering, renewable energy, product design, robotics, computer systems and emerging green technologies.
