Social Sciences taster session: What makes something funny? Studying humour in the social sciences

In this taster session, we'll explore how social science researchers interpret evidence and build knowledge, by looking at an everyday, taken-for-granted part of life: humour. Through discussion of examples of jokes, memes and comedy clips, we will address the question - what does it take for something to be funny?

We'll consider the norms, values and beliefs a joke assumes we share, why the same joke might work in one context and not another, and how researchers go about studying something that feels so personal and individual. 

This session also includes a Q&A with our academic staff and current students.
