Many of us hold strong beliefs about leadership and teamwork. For example, are great leaders simply born with natural talent? Are the best teams those that avoid conflict and always get along? In this engaging and interactive taster lecture, we put some of these common assumptions to the test and explore what research evidence actually tells us.
Drawing on insights from organisational psychology and management research, students will discover how leadership skills can be developed over time and why effective teamwork is not about avoiding disagreement, but about creating an environment where people feel comfortable sharing ideas and challenging one another respectfully. Through interactive activities and discussions, students will be invited to reflect on their own experiences of leadership and teamwork in contexts such as school projects, part-time jobs, sports teams, and community activities.
The session is suitable for students interested in business, management, psychology, and the social sciences. It will be led by Dr Cristian Vasquez, organisational psychologist and lecturer at Sheffield University Management School. Students will also have the opportunity to ask questions about studying at university and hear from a current student ambassador about their experiences.
By the end of the session, students will have gained evidence-based insights into leadership and teamwork and will leave with practical ideas they can apply in their studies, future careers, and everyday life.
