German taster: Are the Nazis back? The far-right "Alternative for Germany" party and its messaging

The rise of the Alternative für Deutschland has been meteoric. Within less than 15 years, it has gone from a marginal protest party to a serious challenge to the established political order. This is all the more surprising as post-war Germany had for decades been largely resistant to far-right extremism and political populism. Yet the AfD incorporates both. This lecture explores the AfD’s rhetoric and electoral appeal as well as the features of political populism generally. Key to the talk will be the analysis of some AfD election posters.
