East Asian Studies taster session: North Korea on screen - Culture, division and power

This talk explores how North Korea appears in South Korean films, television and popular culture, and why these images are significant beyond just entertainment. We will examine how screen stories have influenced ideas about Korea's division, identity and possible reconciliation, and reveal why South Korean media poses such a serious threat to the North Korean regime. Tracing the shift from portrayals of North Koreans as faceless enemies to human stories of friendship and shared identity, this talk shows how culture can challenge propaganda, encourage critical thought and weaken authoritarian control.
