Online media are key spaces for the dissemination of gender-based ideologies, with language playing an important role in how men, women and non-binary people are represented. The choices that content creators, social media influencers and forum members make can shape audience's opinions, attitudes and perspectives, sometimes in harmful ways. This session will chart some of the main gender discourses across a variety of online spaces, including forums, social media, and audio/visual content. This session will help you identify manipulative and persuasive language, recognise strategies of dehumanisation and othering, and be able to use linguistic terminology to talk about online language in a structured way.
