University event offered by Birmingham City University
Short Session Delivered at Birmingham City University
In this session, participants will be considering drawing not as a thing, static object, or means of representation, but rather an activity and a record of the body in time. Drawing is as much about immediacy as it is understanding, and this workshop explores the importance of chance in the art-making process. The critic John Berger once said that drawing is a form of probing. The first generic impulse to draw derives from the human need to search, to plot points, to place things and to place oneself - to take some(thing) outside oneself and to take it into your mind and move it through your body as a way of understanding it and translating it into a new form. The session will begin with a short contextual talk showing artists where this translation is present in their work in various ways, designed to stimulate students thinking about how we draw, what a drawing can be and what it could be for.
