Touching upon Year 1's module at Birkbeck "Rewriting our World", this engaging one-hour session with Dr?Anna Hartnell?explores?reading as freedom, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, education, transformation. 

In this session we will?explore the significance of reading by looking at The Autobiography of?Malcolm?X (1965). In this text, the iconic black rights leader describes his experience of learning to read in prison as a transformative act that paves his path to freedom. We will discuss what it means to read, write and think at university, and the kinds of futures it opens. ?

This taster course is open to students in Year 11 (GCSE or equivalent year),  Year 12, Year 13 (final year A Level/IB students) and anyone who is thinking of starting their undergraduate studies in September 2026 or in September 2027.
