An academic Computer Science workshop relating to the topic of Mars rovers, taught by an Aberystwyth University lecturer.
AberWorkshops are academic workshops, available in a variety of subjects, delivered by Aberystwyth University experts, conducted face-to-face or virtually.
"Controlling Mars Rovers" - Computer Science AberWorkshop
How do you control a rover on Mars when signals take minutes to arrive and live steering is impossible?
Researchers at Aberystwyth University contribute to software used by the European Space Agency’s ExoMars rover — including how the rover plans actions when live control from Earth isn’t possible.
In this hands-on workshop, students discover how engineers program rover actions in advance and analyse the results later. Through a guided rover challenge, learners practise core programming and computational thinking concepts, including sequencing, logic, optimisation, and testing, while also exploring how real Mars missions gather scientific evidence and solve unexpected problems.
AberWorkshops are designed to be interactive and thought-provoking, providing valuable insight into university study and subject pathways while encouraging critical thinking and discussion.
