Full event details

What can Victorian literature teach us about dealing with new methods of communication? What can we learn from the past about maintaining meaningful human connection rather than communicating with machines?

This session looks at the ways in which nineteenth-century writers expressed their hopes and anxieties about living in an increasingly networked world. We will consider how they drew on contemporary ideas about poetry to celebrate potential benefits of new communication technologies.

The session will provide insight into the weird and wonderful world of nineteenth-century newspapers and magazines and encourage new perspectives on our own relationship with media and technology.
