Join us for a friendly online taster lecture to support your current studies and find out what it might be like to study history at university.
Session time: Monday 08 December, 13.35-14.20
In this live interactive History event, we will be joined by Dr Francis King, Lecturer in European History, and Matthias Neumann, Professor of Modern History, from the School of History at University of East Anglia who will explore The Rise to Power and Rule of Stalin.
In this interactive online event, Francis and Matthias will discuss the story of Stalin’s career from Bolshevik revolutionary in the Caucasus through 1917, the civil war, reconstruction, collectivisation and industrialisation, the rise of his cult, fascism abroad and terror at home, ending with the supreme test of the system he built – WW2.
Francis and Matthias will then present various visual talking points (images, posters etc.) with questions for the students to consider.
In particular the session will examine some of the dilemmas and problems the USSR and its rulers faced, and consider the emergence and development of the Stalin system as a response to those pressures within the parameters set by communist ideology.
Suitable for: Aged 16+ pre-university students studying, or with a possible interest in studying, History and related disciplines. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome.
