Join us for a friendly online taster lecture to support your current studies and find out what it might be like to study psychology at university.
Session time: Thursday 1 May, 11.30-12.15
During this online interactive seminar, we introduce students to an often difficult element of the research process in which we go from analysis to final conclusions and dissemination. It is designed to support students with their own research projects whilst giving them an insight into how contemporary research in Psychology, and the Social Sciences more broadly, is carried out.
The session will focus on the findings of a live Psychology research project that was initiated in Autumn last year. The ongoing research seeks to characterise different elements of social behaviour during late adolescence and how they can be influenced by different factors of our daily lives. In particular, it concentrates on prosocial behaviour and the interplay between individual traits (internal factors) and external environmental factors on shaping those behaviours.
Louise and Inês, also supported by Dr Marie Smith from Birkbeck and Hannah Diaz-Ballester, an MSc student at UEA, will walk students through the analysis approach and explain key elements of the results in relation to statistical concepts. The team will discuss the extent to which what they have found supports (or fails to support) the original hypotheses, and aligns with other evidence previously reported in the literature.
After considering the limitations of the experiment, the research team will draw their final conclusions and invite participants to propose future directions for research. There will also be a discussion of how to disseminate these findings, e.g., to research participants, other direct stakeholders, as well as broader stakeholders like the media and policy makers.
A short introductory video will be available on this page shortly and will give students a further insight into the live research project and the stages of the process that have already been completed.
Suitable for: 16+ pre university students studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Psychology and related disciplines. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome.
