University event offered by Coventry University
Short Session Delivered at Coventry University Minimum students: 5
How do we catch a killer? Come along and learn all about forensic DNA profiling and how we match DNA profiles to suspects and crime scenes in our Biological and Forensic Sciences course. In the lab, students will extract genomic DNA from their own saliva and analyse it for a particular gene that allows us to confirm whether they are a boy or a girl! They will also analyse their DNA to establish which variation of a particular gene they have to help them understand variation in the general population. Students will have hands on experience in pipetting, DNA extraction, PCR analysis and be taught about gel electrophoresis. They will also learn about how this type of genetic analysis can be used in other areas, for example, to track disease transmission, to establish the paternity of a child and even to check whether a beef burger is actually beef and not horsemeat.
