University event offered by Aberystwyth University
Short Session Delivered online
14:00 Tuesday, 02 July
We’d like to invite your Year 12 school/college students to join us for an academic-focused workshop presented by the Department of International Politics, at Aberystwyth University. The aim of this webinar is to support students in questioning and challenging our thinking about current and topical subjects in politics and to provide an opportunity to interact with our friendly and engaging academic staff. "Crisis of Democracy in the USA?"America is often upheld as a beacon of democracy, but recent events have revealed serious challenges, both to US democratic institutions and to America’s culture of democracy. This workshop explores the US political system, and its flaws, through a discussion of key contemporary themes. These are: rise of populism; polarisation in political parties; race and representation; women’s rights and the abortion debate. Fully interactive, this session looks behind the news headlines to explore the meaning of democracy and the relationship between state institutions and democratic culture.
A level Syllabus Themes: American politics; party systems; elections, Supreme Court; democratic culture.Who can attend? Whilst sessions are linked to A level syllabus themes, they’re open to learners with no prior knowledge of the subject who aren’t studying Politics in school or college.
