Join us for a friendly online taster lecture to support your current studies and find out what it might be like to study computer science at university.
Session time: Monday 17 June, 16.30-17.15
Who is the best chess player in the world? An artificial intelligence.
And the best go player? An artificial intelligence.
And who can answer (almost) all the questions you ask? ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence…
Artificial intelligence is outperforming classical programs and human beings in many tasks, doing them faster and more accurately. How? By combining the power of mathematics and mathematical representations and the speed and computational power of current technology.
In this interactive talk, Dr Laure Daviaud, Associate Professor in Computing Sciences in the School of Computing Sciences at UEA, will outline some general ideas on how the power of mathematics allows artificial intelligence to learn and outperform (most of the time) existing technology.
This trip will take us from linear algebra to probabilities, via optimisation and calculus and show how artificial intelligence creates a mathematical representation of the world that we cannot even comprehend.
Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Maths, Computer Science and related disciplines.
