Contemporary urban challenges: Planning for the provision of adequate shelter

This session introduces the subject of urban studies and planning. It offers an interactive subject taster lecture that focuses on the issue of providing adequate shelter in informal settlements. In a context where approximately 1 billion people worldwide currently live in slums, adequate shelter provision is a crucial challenge for cities attempting to transition towards sustainable urban development. The session reveals how adequate shelter provision requires urban planning responses that engage holistically with issues such as housing, land and service provision and that address the specific needs of residents who live informally.

Through engaging with a real-life case – Mukuru in Nairobi, Kenya (one of East Africa’s largest slums) – you will gain hands-on knowledge of how multi-sectoral and collaborative interventions that combine top-down and bottom-up planning can help make informal settlements become more fair, just and sustainable places.
