Insight into University (previously known as Headstart) is a comprehensive virtual experience allowing students to explore STEM studies at university including degree apprenticeships and the career opportunities that these subjects lead to. It provides access to information on university and student life, STEM projects and activities set by leading UK universities and global STEM companies, first year undergraduate lectures, live interactive sessions with academics, admissions tutors, apprentices, employers and current students.

Every year EDT partner up with leading Universities across the UK including: Abertay University, Aston University, Kingston University, Lancaster University, Northumbria University, Solent University, UCL, University of Birmingham, University of Cambridge, University of Edinburgh, University of Hertfordshire, University of Liverpool, University of Oxford, University of Roehampton, University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, University of Strathclyde, University of Warwick and Nottingham University to give students an insight into STEM courses.

This course will give you access to STEM areas you may have not explored before including Biology, Biomedical, Built Environment, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering including Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Electronics, Mechanical and Marine, Medicinal Drug Design, Food Science, Life Sciences, Materials Science, Maths, Physics, Sustainability and Technology.

There are also fantastic workshops and careers guidance from organisations such as Balfour Beatty, Innovate UK, GSK, GE, GFG Alliance....and more!

The unique feature of this course is that students are able to access content from a diverse range of STEM subjects and will be able to tailor a course that suits their interest.

For 2024 course: 100% of students increased their awareness of STEM opportunities available to them, 99% would recommend the course to a friend or family member, 92% felt the skills and knowledge gained from the course would have a positive impact on their future studies or career.

Course topics

Freedom to explore your preferred areas of STEM. Watch live sessions and recorded lectures that interest you. Take part in projects set up by leading STEM companies and UK universities of your choice. Accumulating in an independent research project on an area that inspired you from the course, presented in away that suits you.

Hear from STEM professionals in top UK STEM companies, from those in early careers including apprentices, graduates and interns to those who have established STEM careers and those who do the hiring about how they got there, what inspired them and what exciting projects they get to work on.
Our exclusive live sessions allow young people to ask questions of STEM professionals, admission officers, current students and professors in a safe and transparent environment.

Get advice from experienced university admission teams on how to make a strong application, student finance, student support, interviews, admissions tests and more.

An option to take part in practical activities to take you away from your screen such as bridge building, creating ice cream on a chemical level and experimenting with flight.

Course requirements

The course runs over 8 weeks over the summer giving you flexibility in how you access and developing your independent research and time management skills vital for university study.

Open to all students aged 16+ and suitable for all abilities, with activities covering different levels of advanced study.

All students need is a genuine interest in STEM subjects and inquisitiveness about what the future can hold for them and how they can help get themselves there.

Course structure

30 hours of study to complete flexibly over 8 weeks in the summer.
