Professor Lambert-Hurley's talk will explore how and why South Asians came to Britain in the colonial period, using a range of short texts and images to introduce the topic. These primary sources will provide a window into three migrant groups in particular: first of all, ayahs, or Indian nursemaids, who travelled to Britain in the eighteenth century to care for children in elite households; secondly, Indian nationalist politicians who participated in British electoral politics from the nineteenth century; and, thirdly, Muslim missionaries responsible for setting up the Woking Muslim Mission at the Shah Jahan Mosque in Surrey in 1912.
