BBC 'Real News' Day in collaboration with LJMU Journalism

This opportunity will be of interest to not only potential journalism students, but those with an interest in news, current affairs, and the wider media industry.

LJMU Journalism is delighted to invite students and teachers to its second ‘Real News’ day, in partnership with BBC Young Reporter. Building on the success of our first event in 2019, this online event will help young people to develop critical thinking and digital literacy; think about the news and its role in society and try out some journalistic techniques.

BBC 'Real News' workshop is in huge demand among schools and colleges nationwide, and offers participants the chance to learn vital digital literacy skills that will help them navigate online news and disinformation.

Schools have the opportunity to sign up for between one and three workshops (a half-day or full-day) which will develop skills such as how to develop a podcast, learning to film and edit on a smartphone - and experiencing the challenges of life as a radio, TV or newspaper editor.

Participants will get the chance to:
• Take part in an interactive ‘Real News’ workshop with specialist BBC trainers, learning vital news literacy skills such as checking facts and sources, and filtering out fake news and false information
• Get involved in smaller, ‘breakout’ workshops, developing skills such as how to develop a podcast, how to write a complex story in just one line – or experience the challenges of life as a TV, radio or newspaper news editor.
• Learn about what it takes to get a career in the media and get the chance to quiz journalists from the BBC and other news outlets about how they got their break
• Have a ‘virtual’ tour of some of LJMU’s newsrooms, TV studio and radio production facilities

Schools and colleges are welcome to attend for the morning only, or all day.
