Terrorism – Pasts, Presents And Futures
This session will explore the emergence and evolution of terrorist violence. In it, we will explore the historical origins and transformation of terrorist violence, before analysing terrorism’s significance as a security threat today. The lecture will finish by reflecting on future directions in terrorism, and the potential impact of social and political dynamics from COVID-19 to digital technologies.

Lee Jarvis is a Professor of International Politics at the University of East Anglia, UK. He is author or editor of fourteen books and over fifty papers on the politics of security and terrorism, including Times of Terror: Discourse, Temporality and the War on Terror; and Terrorism: A Critical Introduction. Lee’s work has been funded by the ESRC, the AHRC, the Australian Research Council, and NATO amongst others.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying Politics, the social sciences more generally and directly related subjects such as Geography and Law. We also welcome students interested in discussing issues of Terrorism who are not necessarily studying it currently.

The IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans and participants will be able to join using laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions. Full details will be sent to those who have registered prior to the event.
