Insight to Engineering

What is it all about?

What does an engineer do? A question which has many answers but difficult to provide a short insight as engineering is not a subject offered by many schools or colleges. Professional engineers typically work in teams to solve problems and it is one of the few careers which offers the opportunity to change the world.

The boundaries between the disciplines are increasingly blurred and hence this course is aimed at providing you with an overview as to some of the differences in studying Chemical, Mechanical or Electronic Engineering and how the subjects can combine to solve challenging interdisciplinary problems.

What will I be doing?

During the course you will get an overview to the different disciplines and in teams will be asked to think about solving some of the issues and problems around a sustainable future, from improving waste processing through to sustainable energy generation. There will be lectures and practical work along with opportunity to talk with a range of female engineers about their career choices and experience.

Lancaster is a collegiate university and as such your residence on campus will be in one of our colleges which will be your home whilst here. Not only do colleges provide accommodation but they also form the central hub for you evening social activities.

Would this course suit me?

This course would suit you if you have interest in Maths and Science and would like to find out how these subjects can lead to a degree in engineering.

Please note:
Accommodation is available on campus the night preceding the course (at an additional cost) for students wishing to travel to Lancaster on Sunday 5th July.

There is a fee to attend this course, but some bursaries are available.

Applications need to be made by student.
