This session helps students get the most out of university open days and HE fairs—offering tailored guidance and activities on campus or at your school. From planning questions to comparing courses, we support all learners, whether they're ready for university or still exploring their options.
HE fairs can be powerful tools for shaping decisions about post-18 education—but without guidance, students may miss vital opportunities or overlook important questions. That’s where this session comes in.
We begin by outlining the purpose and structure of open days and HE fairs, explaining what students can expect from both types of events—whether visiting a university campus or attending a multi-institution fair at school or a local venue. We'll highlight how these experiences fit into the broader research and decision-making process for choosing where and what to study.
Students will be equipped with strategies to prepare effectively before attending. This includes creating a personal checklist of questions to ask academic staff, admissions teams, and current students; identifying which sessions or activities to prioritise; and understanding what course-specific and student life information will be most valuable. We’ll also cover how to explore campus facilities, academic departments, accommodation options, and the overall environment to get a feel for whether a place is right for them.
During the session, we’ll share practical tips on note-taking, capturing impressions, comparing universities, and following up afterwards. For HE fairs, we focus on how to engage with multiple universities efficiently—collecting brochures, asking meaningful questions, and using conversations to clarify options.
To round things off, students will learn how to reflect on these experiences, compare institutions meaningfully, and record insights that will support their UCAS choices, course preferences, and personal statements. Whether students are committed to university or still considering pathways, this session will leave them feeling prepared, empowered, and ready to make the most of every opportunity
