Full event details

This session is designed to provide students with a clear and comprehensive overview of what Higher Education entails, equipping them with the knowledge they need to make informed choices about their next steps.
We begin by exploring the broad landscape of university-level study, including different types of degrees (e.g. Bachelor's, Foundation, Joint Honours), subject areas, and the diverse learning environments students may encounter—from lecture-based teaching to independent research and practical work. Students will be introduced to the wide range of university options available across the UK and beyond, and encouraged to consider what factors—such as location, course content, teaching style, and support services—will shape their own decision-making.
The session will also guide students through how to research institutions and courses effectively, comparing entry requirements, student satisfaction, career prospects, and accommodation options. We’ll show how to use tools like university websites, virtual open days, and league tables to build a shortlist based on their goals and preferences.
To prepare them for the application journey, we’ll provide a high-level overview of the UCAS process—outlining key deadlines, how to choose courses, and what makes a strong application. We'll also introduce the basics of Student Finance in England, touching on tuition fees, maintenance support, and where to find further information.
By the end of the session, students will have a clearer understanding of what Higher Education can offer, what choices are available, and what practical steps they can take to start planning their future.
