ENGLISH AT CITY

Studying English at City will introduce students to a broad range of literatures alongside creative, professional and academic writing in a research-driven environment.

Our English department run a variety of sessions available for schools and colleges, including talks on what it is like to study English at university and taster lectures to give students a feel for university level study in the subject.

ACTIVITIES WE OFFER

We run sessions in the following topics:

Postcolonial Literature

  • What are postcolonial literatures? (lecture or workshop)
  • Toppling statues: what does literature have to do with the British Empire? (lecture or workshop)

Gothic Literature

  • Gender and Gothic Literature (workshop)
  • Bram Stoker's Dracula (workshop or lecture)
  • The late Victorian Gothic (workshop or lecture)

Contemporary Literature and Culture

  • #Austen: twitterature and digital writing (workshop)
  • Pathways to English Professions (workshop)
  • Comics and graphic novels as literature (workshop or lecture)
  • Creative writing as part of an English degree (workshop)
  • Climate fiction: writing the environment (workshop or lecture)

Nineteenth-century Writing

  • Elementary, my dear Watson! Reading Sherlock Holmes (workshop or lecture)
  • Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre (workshop or lecture)

  • This event is only for teachers making bookings for their school groups.
  • These workshops are only suitable for year 12 and 13 (pre UCAS deadline) students.

HOW MUCH DO THESE ACTIVITIES COST?

  • All of our activities are free!
  • However we unfortunately cannot cover transport or food costs for school groups if you're visiting City's campus. 

 

WHERE IS CITY LOCATED?

  • City is based in Central London, so we do not have anywhere for coaches to park.
  • We are located a short walk from Farringdon (Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan, Circle, Elizabeth, Thameslink and Great Northern lines) and Angel (Northern Line) stations

 

All activities are subject to availability of City staff. Whilst we do our best to accommodate requests, we reserve the right to decline bookings if we do not have capacity to deliver them.
