Event Summary:
The Only Way is Ethics
Full Event Details:
The course examines some ethical issues raised by current world debates, and brings in the perspectives of Philosophy and Religion by looking at 'pure' philosophy (the nature of knowledge, truth, and meaning and the structure of arguments); and 'applies' it to questions around religion and ethics - the existence and nature of the divine, and the implications of religious belief for the way we live. It will also look at contemporary moral issues, e.g. in business, in medicine (developments in embryo research and genetic engineering), in interpersonal/sexual ethics, morality and imagination.
This course is based on the content of the popular Philosophy, Religion & Ethics degree at Heythrop. Lectures on the day will also cover such questions as;
" Is the Mind the Brain? - That the mind and the brain are closely connected is beyond doubt. But are they the same thing?
" Life and After-Life - Could life continue beyond the death of the body, as millions claim is the case?
" Is Pleasure the Ultimate Good?
" Love, Redemption, and God - can we be redeemed by Love?
It will also be possible to have a tour of campus and to meet and mingle with staff and students from the courses, over the lunch hour. A more detailed programme of the day(s) will be available from our web site.
