The guest speakers for this event are Tom Howard, a Lecturer at St Mary’s University, Twickenham and an Academy Coach at Chelsea Football Club and Adrian Salisbury, the Project Officer with The Chelsea Foundation.

An introduction to university opportunities in football coaching and development + foundation degree programmes
Tom shares statistics on graduate employment after students graduate with a foundation degree. He talks about what foundation degree programmes look like and how it is different to a traditional degree. The way you are taught at university will differ greatly to school and college teaching, and Tom talks about the different learning styles you will experience. He goes on to speak about the entry requirements and your weekly schedule which is different to timetables for traditional degree students. Finally, Tom focuses on assessment methods which are varied and help to prepare you for the interactive world we live in.

Introducing a coaching and development degree
Adrian talks about what it is like to work in football and the variety of roles you can go into if you are interested in this sector. This type of degree is different to traditional degrees and consists of a practical based approach to learning. Not only are you taught through academic lectures, but this contextualised learning is applied to real life, explains Adrian.

He speaks about how theory you learn in the classroom is utilised in work placements to enhance the way you learn. In all three years at university you will have the opportunity to complete work placements. Adrian explains how many hours you will complete, which settings you will experience and any additional research you are required to complete. Finally, he talks about where you will study and touches on the type of technology available for you to access on the course which will enhance your learning.
