Session time: Wednesday 18 June, 14.10-14.55
Racism in the NHS
This session will take a critical approach to discussing racism in the NHS. Evidence shows that racism has a significant impact on health. Studies have shown that racism contributes to anxiety, depression, and numerous physical illnesses including cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases.
The NHS is a vital institution which has been scrutinised in recent years over its approaches to tackling racism. Studies have exposed the NHS as having a culture of silence or ‘colour-blindness’ which means that racism persists for its patients and staff.
As someone interested in health inequalities, is vital to understand the impact of racism on health, and the context of the organisation in which healthcare is delivered.
This interactive session will challenge you to consider your beliefs and assumptions about race, privilege and the role of institutions. There will opportunities for discussion and debate which will develop your understanding of this important issue.
The session will develop critical thinking, skills and approaches to support students in their Health/Social Sciences studies and future aspirations.
Suitable for: Aged 16+ pre-university students studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Health/Social Sciences and related disciplines. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome.
