Location: UCS Bury St Edmunds. Making Learning Happen In Turbulent Times -
Professor Philip Race. Professor Philip Race will ask the audience, in this interactive lecture, various questions about how they themselves learn (or learned), and draw out from the responses seven factors which underpin successful learning. Philip has asked these questions to well over one hundred thousand people around the world in the last twenty years and the seven factors form a practical basis to structure both teaching and independent learning. The lecture will also touch on the importance of formative feedback to make learning happen successfully, and the need to involve learners in their own and each others’ assessment.

Profile: Professor Philip Race started his academic career as a scientist, but gradually became an educational developer. He completely failed to take early retirement in 1995, and has been even busier ever since. He now spends most of his time running workshops for teaching staff in universities and colleges across the UK and beyond. Professor Race leads highly interactive workshops and keynotes on assessment, learning and teaching in higher and further education and publishes widely on these areas. His passion is about ‘making learning happen’, in an approachable way, without recourse to jargon, acronyms or elitism. His work was recognised in 2007 by the Higher Education Academy awarding a National Teaching Fellowship and the status of ‘Senior Fellow’ of the Academy. He is a Visiting Professor of Educational Development at UCS.
