Full event details

The leadership day consists of four workshops which are suitable for students in years 11, 12 and 13 who have an interest in public health careers as well as a range of other health and wellbeing roles.
By engaging in the leadership day students will develop key skills in health promotion which they can use in initiatives to help improve the awareness of health issues amongst their peers and families.

Workshop 1 – Planning health promotion initiatives
As the saying goes, “if you fail to plan you are planning to fail” – so, to prevent your initiative from failing, in this workshop will look at some straightforward planning models that can be used to structure and deliver your initiative, as well as understand how successful it has been. The models we will share with you draw on principles from management, as well as psychology and personal development theory, so they will not only help you in this initiative but in other areas of your studies.

Workshop 2 – Engaging people in discussions about their health
When you have identified your health issue that needs addressing you will need to adopt
initiatives and approaches that engage people in decisions about their health, which
ultimately will lead to improvements. In this workshop we will look at the essential
interpersonal communication skills a public health promotion practitioner or a community development worker would need to effectively engage people in these discussions. You can then use these skills in delivering your initiative.

Workshop 3 – Understanding people’s health needs
Understanding a community’s needs will ensure you are targeting the most important
health issues for them. In this workshop you will be introduced to a model of health needs assessment and understand how the needs of students in your school can be identified, as well as the reasons why you may not base your health promotion initiative on the communities’ needs but on other factors.

Workshop 4 – Marketing strategies in public health promotion
The media, and in particular, social media, is now widely used to influence health beliefs and behaviours. In this workshop you will explore the many creative ways that social media can be used to share health messages…and educate us about new and innovative ways that young people are using social media!

The workshops aim to inspire and upskill students to develop their own ambassadorial role within their school, college, or wider community through their development of a health promotion initiative. The workshops will complement the work the students will already be doing on their courses in health & social care, sociology, psychology and other related areas.
The outcomes aim to enhance experience of public health, health & social care and health & wellbeing courses in higher education, and the development of core skills valued by educational institutions and public health and wellbeing employers.
