Getting to the root of Euroscepticism? The UK and early European integration after World War II

In this talk, we will explore the attitude of the UK towards European integration in the post-World War II period, from the end of the conflict to the creation of the European Economic Community in 1957 - the ancestor of the EU as we know it today. We will explore why the UK decided not to take part in early efforts to integrate Europe economically and politically. We will look at how the 'European question' has divided UK politicians and citizens across the political spectrum, and the reasons that explain their reluctance towards European integration. We will then conclude by discussing how these legacies have shaped British Euroscepticism up to today and the momentous decision of the UK to leave the EU. With Pierre Bocquillon.
