This webinar is hosted by Jon Cheek, the Founder and Director of UniTasterDays. Guidance is provided for students to help them make good choices when considering university. The guest speakers for this event are Shannen Dabson, the Higher Education Progression Adviser at the Shaping Uni Connect Network and Katie Whitmore, a Regional Student Recruitment Officer at the University of South Wales.

Study skills
Shannen explains what study skills are and how they help you to develop as an independent learner.

Not only do they help you gain transferable skills, but they are also about finding out the best way for you to study. She speaks about the best mindset you can have for studying, and how you can develop your brain to study in the most efficient way possible.

There are many factors which influence the way you study and Shannen looks at how your diet, sleep and environment all have an influence on your learning. She goes on to talk about the benefits of a study timetable to help you revise, touching on the different learning styles. She speaks about how to find a style which is most appropriate for you. The main three are active learning, visual learning and auditory learning. Finally, Shannen shares different studying techniques which will help make learning effective and fun.

How to study effectively
Katie talks about studying during a global pandemic, and how you can set up a good environment for effective studying during times of uncertainty.

Katie explains why it is important to have a good mindset for studying and how you can mentally prepare yourself beforehand.

There are many skills you can develop which go hand-in-hand with effective learning and Katie talks about how you can develop these whilst at home. She speaks about how to physically prepare for a study session, and shares tips to make it easier to get tasks completed during the day. Katie goes on to talk about higher education and how study skills can help to prepare you for university. Finally, she shares effective reading techniques and breaks down the structure of writing a good essay.
