What is it all about?

Materials Science is an interdisciplinary subject, which combines elements of physics, chemistry, engineering and even biology. We study how the properties of a material are affected by its structure and the way it has been processed, and the subject has applications in every aspect of our daily lives, from computer chips to prosthetics, and from buildings to clean energy.

This course will give you a deeper insight into Materials Science in our everyday lives, learning hands-on skills within the laboratory environment.

What will I be doing?

During the course, you will spend two days at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy in Cambridge, where you will take part in university-style lectures and practicals, to give you a flavour of what to expect at first year undergraduate level. You will also hear about university life from lecturers, admissions tutors and students.

You will stay in Murray Edwards College accommodation, where you will also spend a day learning about university life, considering what you would like to study, hearing about the applications process, and thinking further ahead with a careers session.

There will also be tours of the Materials Science department and Murray Edwards College, social events and free time.

Would this course suit me?

This course will suit you if you are a year 11 / S4 girl who has a passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), and are thinking of studying the physical sciences (physics or chemistry) at A-level.

There is a fee to attend this course but some bursaries are available.

Applications need to be made by students.
