‘JUSTICE AND THE JUDICIARY’

Judge Georghios M. Pikis,is a founding Justice of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, former President of the Supreme Court of Cyprus, former ad hoc Judge of the European Court of Human Rights and author of The Rome Statute (Martinus Nijhoff, 2010) and Justice and the Judiciary (Martinus Nijhoff, 2012).


In this legal and philosophical lecture, the speaker will draw upon the core themes of his latest book, as well as his experience as a senior judge. He will begin by assessing the meaning and implications of justice and will suggest that human rights, the rule of law and democracy are the offspring of justice. He will then consider the role of the judiciary as the agent and persona of justice.
