‘DATAMINING THE OLD BAILEY PROCEEDINGS FOR THE HISTORY OF THE ANGLO-AMERICAN TRIAL’

The lecture will draw attention to the printed Old Bailey Proceedings include 197,000 trial reports covering the period 1673-1913.

They comprise the formal and comprehensive record of the court where modern adversarial justice was created. By analysing the distribution of trial reports across centuries, and across crime types, and verdicts, this lecture revises the histories of both the rise of the adversarial trial, and of plea bargaining as a central component of the experience of the defendant.
