Inaugural Athena SWAN Lecture – By Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell

The Athena SWAN Charter evolved from work between the Athena Project and the Scientific Women’s Academic Network (SWAN), to advance the representation of women in science, engineering and technology (SET). Brunel’s Athena SWAN action plan, endorsed by its Council, includes the introduction of an annual Athena SWAN Research Award scheme to support members of academic staff in the continuation of their research careers in addition to an annual lecture series.

Professor Rothwell, FRS, is President and Vice-Chancellor at The University of Manchester, Co-Chair of the Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology and was recently appointed as Deputy Lieutenant for Greater Manchester. She takes a strong and active interest in public communication of science and regularly gives talks and contributes to television, radio and press. In 2003 she won the prestigious Pfizer Research Prize, in 2004 was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and in 2005 was honoured with a DBE.

The lecture will be held in the Eastern Gateway Building Auditorium here at Brunel and will start promptly at 11.30am.
