Our English Department are offering a subject conference for AS/A2 Level students to provide two lectures and support their studies.

The format of the day is as follows:

1.30pm - 2pm
Arrival at Hope and complimentary refreshments

2pm - 2.15pm
Welcome to Hope and the English Department

2.15pm - 3.15pm
Wilfred Owen. By Dr Guy Cuthbertson.
Wilfred Owen is one of the best-known poets of the twentieth century and the quintessential war poet. He is regularly studied at schools and colleges but has he been misrepresented and misunderstood? This session will be based on Dr Guy Cuthbertson’s new biography of Owen for Yale University Press, and it will be of help to any A-Level students studying the Literature of the First World War.

3.15pm - 4.15pm
Language Attitudes. By Dr Ruth Kircher.
This session will focus on attitudes towards standard and non-standard language varieties. Topics discussed will include the pervasiveness of such attitudes in all areas of society as well as the implications of such attitudes in applied contexts such as
education.

4.15pm - 4.30pm
Closing Address and Questions
