'Ethical Dilemmas: Should Business be Socially Responsible?' Masterclass

This session introduces the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and explores the question of whether business ethics is an oxymoron. We will explore the position of business in society and examine the roles of the state (government) and civil society organisations (CSOs) in terms of holding business to account. There have been a number of recent corporate scandals including slave-labour working conditions in global supply chains and tax evasion, which will be examined in more detail. The session will be interactive and students will be asked to consider whether fair-trade in a competitive marketplace is truly fair and whether their own purchasing decisions are driven by ethical motives when shopping on the high-street.
