Full event details

Students will spend the majority of the day participating in one of three workshops (see
following text). In addition, they have the opportunity to take a tour of the Greenwich
Campus, and put questions to a panel of university staff and students.

Workshops:

Lights, Cameras, ACTION! – A Film/TV Production
This is a hands-on introduction to making films and TV programmes. During the day,
students work in teams to devise an idea for a short narrative sequence. After they
have learned some basic camera skills, they will shoot the footage and, following a brief
overview of very basic editing techniques in our Apple Mac suite, edit their shots into a
sequence. They then add music and sound to give the piece atmosphere. It may not be a
blockbuster, but it will be a fun start!
Subject areas: digital media, multimedia, film production, TV production.

Does Computing Have the X-Factor?
Discover the extra factor that computing has to offer. During this course, students
participate in a series of hands-on tutorials that enable them to try different and exciting areas of computing for themselves. This could include:
••Learning about what goes on under the hood of a PC
••Building their website with Flash animations
••Learning how to write an application for their mobile and vote for their own website
over the Internet.
Subject areas: ICT, computer science, computer forensics, web technology.

I’m a Mathematician – Get Me Out of Here
This workshop gives students the opportunity to discover the exciting world of mathematics and learn how mathematicians think. They can see how mathematics shapes the world we live in and have fun with stimulating mathematical problems and puzzles. It provides ideas about a range of career possibilities open to mathematics and
statistics graduates, from the financial world to the latest research projects.
Subject areas: ICT, computer science, computer forensics, web technology.

By the end of this taster day, students will have:
••Learned about a particular area of computing or mathematics and gained practical skills in this area
••Found out more about the university’s School of Computing & Mathematical
Sciences and the range of programmes it offers
••Gained an understanding of the careers open to computing and mathematics
graduates
••Experienced being a university student for the day.
