Full event details

The University of Birmingham, in association with Birmingham City council and supported by Aston University and Birmingham City University, is proud to be hosting the British Science Festival 2014 on the Edgbaston Campus this year. The BSF is one of Europe’s largest Festivals dedicated to the promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths subjects and attracts leading Science Communicators from around the world to deliver lectures, workshops and fun and exciting science demonstrations to students and the general public.

For schools, there are two main programmes. A pre-16 programme (Years 9-11) and a Post 16 programme (Yr 12-13).

For the Pre-16 programme, schools book onto a whole days worth of activities. The main keynote lecture every morning is highlighted for each of the days (Monday to Wednesday). Students will then attend interactive workshops, demonstrations and visit the Science and Careers in Action Zone and the day will end with another fun keynote lecture. The Science and careers in Action Zone will have science demonstrations, a careers speed dating area and students will also have access to Careers Advisers who will provide information about careers in the STEM subjects.

How to Book Places for the Pre-16 Programme (Yr 9-11)
To book places, please choose the day you wish to attend (8-10th September). Please let us know how many students you wish to bring and the age group of the students. To reserve your places, please email [email protected]. Places are very limited so early booking is advised.

How to Book Places for the Post 16 Programme
The post 16 programme is designed so students can pick and choose which sessions they want to attend, depending on the A levels that they are studying. The programme can be tailored to suit individual needs. There is an online booking system for post 16 students. Details of which can be found on the British Science Festival website.

Thursday 11th September
The British Science Festival Big Science Quiz
Years 9-11

The Big Quiz will be hosted in the Great Hall on Thursday 11th September for students in year 9-11. Schools can enter a maximum of 12 students (3 teams of 4) for the event. The format for the Big Quiz will be similar to the existing Big Quizzes that the university organises annually. We are encouraging schools to bring a mixture of year groups and if possible, pupils who have already taken part in the UoB Physics, Maths or Biology Big Quizzes over the last few years. There will be trophies, prizes and medals for the top placed teams. After the quiz, students will attend a keynote lecture and the Science and Careers in Action Zone.
