Girls Allowed! Why Women Should Study Physics

Girls Allowed! is a one-day interactive event hosted by Brunel University that aims to encourage and inspire female students currently studying at GCSE or A-level to consider studying Physics based courses at A-level and beyond. The event is funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council; the main funding agency for particle physics, nuclear physics and astronomy/astrophysics in the UK. As such, the day’s activities are centred on these areas of physics, with a particular emphasis on experimental particle physics.

Dr Jo Cole and Dr Dawn Leslie are the co-hosts of this event and are both active members of the CMS experiment on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. They will use their expertise to provide a morning of presentations and fun activities centred on experimental particle physics. After lunch the focus changes to more general physics, but with an emphasis on the role of women in the subject – it is hoped that this will include a Q&A session with a number of female physicists from both industry and academia, allowing your students to learn from women in the industry.
