This taster day will give you an idea of what pure mathematics is really like, at a Russell Group university. The two themes of this course are randomness and disorder.
Most people would agree that a string of 100 coin tosses is a good example of a random object. But what does this really mean? How predictable is such an object and how good is our intuition for it? The idea of order and disorder leads to the branch of mathematics known as Ramsey theory. Starting from simple concepts and armed with a few mathematical ideas you will discover some intriguing problems some of which are still amazingly unsolved.
A mixture of lectures and tutorial sessions will be offered and current undergraduates will be there on the day to guide you around and answer your questions about university life. Lunch will be provided.
