04 August 2020 at 12:00

Event Summary

This webinar is hosted by Jon Cheek, the Founder and Director of UniTasterDays who touches upon the guidance and help provided to students to help them make good choices when considering university. This is followed by three guest speakers who each talk about different aspects of university.

Subject Special: Student Loans
The guest speaker for this event is Kevin Macmillan, an Account Manager at the Student Loans Company. Kevin outlines what the Student Loans Company is and who they provide support to. Before giving out any loans, checks are made to make sure the right people are getting the right money and Kevin explains what these are. He talks about what type of loans/support is available should you choose to go to university, the most common being the tuition fee loan and maintenance loan. Kevin goes through the application procedure, how much you are entitled to and when you receive the money. Both tuition and maintenance loans are what everyone is entitled to but there is additional support given to students with disabilities, students with caring responsibilities and students with children. Kevin explains how to find out if you are eligible for additional support. Other sources of funding are given through bursaries, scholarships and NHS funding and it is worth finding if you are entitled to any of these and how to apply. Kevin highlights why it is important to apply early on for student finance as it takes time to process the application. Funding is not only given to UK residents but also to students from the EU and around the world. When it comes to repayment, the process is unique and different to how other loans work and this is explained in this session. Finally, Kevin shares useful resources to find out more information about student finance.

Session summary from Rubaya Zaman, a final year English Literature student at the University of Birmingham.
