Our experience

Evaluation projects will be led by Jon Cheek and Matt Horton, who have over 25 years’ combined experience of research and evaluation within schools and higher education providers. More...

Jon is the Founder and Director of UniTasterDays Ltd. He has previously worked for three universities and sat as an Executive Committee member of the Higher Education External Relations Association. Jon now delivers and co-ordinates the delivery of school and college events in schools nationwide, which includes post-delivery impact studies.

Jon has a wide range of experience at the delivery end of research and evaluation – including project managing internal research projects and commissioning external higher education research and evaluation – from quantitative perception studies through to managing qualitative focus groups.

Matt Horton is one of the leading lights of higher education monitoring and evaluation. He has worked in higher education research and evaluation for over ten years, as well as undertaking his own PhD research evaluating the impact of widening participation interventions. Matt has extensive experience of conducting evaluation within schools and colleges.

Matt has published numerous evaluation reports, toolkits and methodologies which have been highlighted as good practice by HEFCE, OFFA, The Sutton Trust and HEA - and during 2019 ‘sector leading’ by the Office for Students. Matt is a member of the OfS tracking and outcomes advisory group and provides expertise to support the national monitoring and evaluation of the National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP).

Jon and Matt previously led the UniTasterDays National Review of University Guidance, in collaboration with HELOA. This has been commended by organisations including Careers England, the CDI, HELOA and NEON following publication in February 2019.

How can we help higher education providers?

The Office for Students have increased emphasis for higher education providers to evaluate their Access and Participation Plan and NCOP outreach activities and programmes to identify 'what works'. More...

We can support this through:

  • Developing your evaluation strategy to ensure that it adheres to OfS standards of evidence.
  • Developing bespoke monitoring and evaluation toolkits to measure short, medium- and long-term pupil outcomes.
  • Supporting targeting and planning through localised analysis of administrative data sets to identify which groups are most underrepresented within higher education.
  • Supporting the development of NCOP outreach hubs by identifying 'cold spots' and the barriers faced by schools and colleges in the engagement of outreach activities.
  • Conducting robust quantitative and qualitative evaluations to identify what works, for who, and in what context. We have experience of employing a 360 approach by working with pupils, teachers and practitioners within our evaluation feedback loop.

How can we help schools and colleges?

We specialise in conducting pupil and parent evaluations to provide robust insights to support school planning, improvement, pupil progress and reporting for Ofsted inspections. More...

With increased emphasis on improving pupil attainment, it is important to identify why some pupils are not progressing to their full potential. We have over 10 years’ experience of exploring these factors. We can provide support to develop bespoke evaluations to explore:

  • Pupil behaviour, attitudes, motivation
  • Attainment and teaching
  • Pupil pathways and aspirations
  • KS4 option choices
  • Measuring the impact of specific intervention programmes

The evaluation is very worthwhile - it gives us a good starting-point for conversations with students to focus efforts on those areas where they are still unsure. We are also able to use the results within the annual report to advise our progress under our aspirations programme.
