Session time: Wednesday 5 March, 16.15-17.00

From classical ukiyo-e prints that shaped Western Impressionism to the bold avant-garde movements of the 20th century and the vibrant pop art of today, Japanese artists have continuously redefined artistic expression. We’ll explore the works of iconic figures like Yayoi Kusama and Takashi Murakami, whose art challenges ideas of identity, technology, and cultural exchange.

This session offers a fresh perspective on modern and contemporary Japanese art and culture, breaking away from stereotypes and uncovering the dynamic forces shaping Japan today. Whether you’re interested in history, creativity, or simply love Japanese art, this talk will open your eyes to Japan’s profound impact on the global art scene.

Join us for an engaging exploration of how tradition meets innovation in Japanese art, followed by a Q&A where you can ask anything about Japan’s creative world!

Suitable for: Aged 16+ pre-university students studying, or with a possible interest in, Art, Languages and Cultures, and related subjects. Student groups as well as students and teachers joining individually are very welcome.
